There are many times that a vacationer finds themselves looking for a destination city that offers something for everyone in their family or travel group.  For the lucky traveler that chooses it, Rio de Janeiro can definitely fit that description.  From the great hotels and restaurants, to the fantastic beaches and access to the beautiful water, and even to the more natural surroundings of the mountains and forests, Rio de Janeiro offers an incredible amount of attractions and experiences that few other international cities can hope to match.  A visit to Rio de Janeiro is perfect for couples of any age group, and even entire families.

Cristo Redentor

Christ the Redeemer

Christ the Redeemer

Cristo Redentor, or the Statue of Christ the Redeemer, is one of the most famous attractions in all of South America.  The statue stands 120 feet tall, including it’s pedestal, and sits atop Corcovado Mountain overlooking Rio de Janeiro.  This is more than a statue though, this is a tourist friendly monument that provides the opportunity for an incredible view of the city of Rio de Janeiro and the Pacific Ocean beyond.

Visitors can reach the statue either by road or by rail.  The train that leads to the top has been in use since the early 1900s and offers an incredible experience.  At the top there are viewing areas, a chapel, and more.  From below, the majestic statue appears to be comforting the entire city of Rio de Janeiro.  It is no wonder that this statue is so popular with locals and tourists alike.  Viewing it up close or from far away is an unforgettable experience.

Ipanema Beach
Made famous by the song “The Girl from Ipanema”, Ipanema Beach has been welcoming visitors to Rio de Janeiro for well over a century.  The beach is gorgeous and popular, though it can at times become crowded.  This is by far one of the most popular places in all of Rio de Janeiro to do some people watching at.

There are a number of activities that can be participated in at Ipanema Beach including sunbathing, beach games, beach combing, swimming, body boarding, and golfing.  Adjacent to the beach area is a well developed business district that caters in a big way specifically to those coming for the beach experience.  There are retail outlets, bars, restaurants, cafes, nightclubs, dance clubs, street vendors, and more.  Anyone visiting Rio de Janeiro and looking to spend some time at the popular beaches in town should make plans to spend at least part of one of their days in the city at Ipanema Beach.

Tijuca National Park

For those visiting Rio de Janeiro and wanting to get out and experience the great outdoors in Brazil, the first place that should be traveled to is Tijuca National Park.  Tijuca National park is a massive place, covering a great deal of area in and around the city.  Corcovado Mountain, home to the sculpture of Christ the Redeemer, is located within the park.  One fact that is amazing is that the entire park was replanted by 19th century government officials after most of the land had originally been cleared to make way for coffee farms.  Today the mature forest that has taken over the area offers a number of activities and things to see including hiking, wildlife viewing, the statue of Christ the Redeemer, nature walks, and more.  For anyone looking for a break from the city, there is no better place to head to than Tijuca National Park.

Sugar Loaf Mountain

Sugarloaf Mountain

Sugar Loaf Mountain is a nearly 400 foot tall granite mountain overlooking Rio de Janeiro.  This is another of the famous landmarks in the immediate vicinity of this incredible city.  Sugar Loaf Mountain is viewable from below in a number of ways and from a number of locations.  The best way to experience the mountain though is to take the cable car ride to the top.  A cable car was first put into place to reach the top of the mountain in 1912, it has been updated and modernized over the years and today is one of the best ways to not only see the mountain itself, but also a great view of the entire city and surrounding area.  Rock climbers also flock to Sugar Loaf Mountain too and watching them attempt to climb up the massive granite and quartz rock is interesting and entertaining at the very same time.  Some of the best vacation photographs that a vacationer can take are usually taken either out of the window of the gondola on the way up to the mountain, or on the summit of Sugar Loaf Mountain itself.

Petropolis

Rio de Janeiro is an exciting city to visit for a number of reasons.  The fast paced lifestyle, especially apparent in the areas of the city that cater to tourists, make for an exciting stay in the city.  Sometimes though it is attractive to some people to take a break from the city and set out to experience a calmer and more peaceful way of life.

Petropolis is just a short drive away from Rio de Janeiro and sits in the middle of a dense forest.  This was briefly the capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro in the late 1800s, and the palace there is something to behold in person.  There are a number of opportunities to experience the colonial past of Petropolis and this is also a popular destination for those interested in history.  The drive to and from Petropolis, whether a traveler handles their own transportation or not, is very rewarding and offers some great scenery.  Petropolis is located higher up in the mountains so on particularly hot days in Rio de Janeiro, it can come as a welcome escape with it’s cooler temperatures.
